How to Pick the Right Fire Extinguisher

I’ve decided to buy a fire extinguisher for my apartment. I didn’t really know anything about them so I did a little research to find out what I would need.

It turns out that there are several classes of extinguishers that are designed for different kinds of fires.

Class A

Labeled with letter A for ordinary combustible materials like cloth, wood, paper, rubber and many plastics

Class B

For flammable and combustible liquids such as gasoline, alcohol, diesel oil, oil-based paints and flammable gasses

Class C

Electrical fires—say your power strip starts burning

Class D

Combustible metals such as magnesium, titanium and sodium

Class K

Fires that involve vegetable oils, animal oils or fats in cooking appliances

And The Winner Is

The Fire Department recommends either a Class B or Class K extinguisher for household use.  I think I’m going to go with the Class K. I’ll write a post about the particular model I get after I bring it home.
